Cape Town pool renovations have shifted in the last two years. Homeowners are choosing finishes and features that look modern, last longer, and cost less to run. Here are the 7 upgrades we are installing most often in 2026.

1. Dark interior finishes

Black, charcoal and deep navy pool interiors have replaced the traditional pale blue. The reflective surface looks far more modern, integrates better with contemporary architecture, and creates a mirror-like effect that doubles as a feature in your garden.

Dark finishes also absorb more solar heat, which adds 2 to 3 degrees of natural pool warmth in the Cape Town summer.

2. Glass mosaic feature walls

Instead of plain tiling around the entire pool, more homeowners are choosing a single mosaic feature wall, usually facing the main entertainment area or kitchen window. It creates a focal point without the cost of full mosaic tiling, which can be eye-watering.

3. Built-in beach entries

A gentle beach-style entry replacing traditional steps is the single most-requested renovation feature this year. It is more accessible for older homeowners, kids and pets, and looks far more luxurious. Works particularly well in larger pools.

4. LED colour-changing lighting

The newer wifi-controlled LED pool lights cost a fraction of older fibre-optic systems, use 80 percent less power, and let you change colours from your phone. For entertaining at night, the impact is enormous.

5. Variable-speed pump upgrades

Loadshedding has changed how Cape Town homeowners think about pool equipment. A variable-speed pump uses 60 to 70 percent less electricity than a standard pump, runs more quietly, and pairs with solar geyser systems beautifully.

This is the upgrade that pays for itself fastest, usually within 18 to 24 months on a normal-sized pool.

6. Integrated spa or splash zones

Carving out a small raised spa section with overflow into the main pool is now affordable as a renovation, not just a new-build feature. We are doing this for homeowners who want spa functionality without sacrificing the main pool footprint.

7. Smart automation and monitoring

Pool automation has dropped in price dramatically. Systems now exist for under R15,000 that let you control pump, lights, heating and chemical dosing from your phone. They also alert you to problems before they become expensive, leak detection, low chlorine, equipment failure.

The best pool renovation upgrades pay you back. Either in lifestyle, in property value, or in lower running costs. Often all three.

What we tell renovating homeowners

Renovations are about getting more from what you already have. Before you spend money on cosmetic upgrades, check the bones first.

  • Is the shell sound? (A fibreglass reline can add 15 to 20 years)
  • Is the equipment efficient? (A variable-speed pump pays for itself fast)
  • Is the layout right? (Beach entries, spas and feature walls are best done at this stage)

Get those right and the rest is icing. We have done over 200 pool renovations in the Western Cape, and the projects we are proudest of are the ones where the homeowner ended up with a pool that looks completely new but cost a fraction of building from scratch.
