Building or renovating a pool in the Western Cape? The two most popular interior finishes are fibreglass and marbelite. Both can deliver a beautiful, long-lasting pool, but they perform very differently in our climate. Here is the honest comparison.
What is fibreglass?
A fibreglass pool finish is built up in layers of glass-reinforced polyester resin, then coated with a smooth gelcoat surface. It can be applied to a new shell or as a relining over an old, deteriorating marbelite surface.
What is marbelite?
Marbelite is a hard cement-based plaster mixed with crushed marble chips. It is troweled onto a concrete shell to create a smooth, slightly textured surface that has been the South African standard for decades.
How they compare
Durability
Fibreglass wins. A quality fibreglass surface lasts 15 to 20 years before needing rework. Marbelite typically needs replastering every 7 to 10 years in the Cape Town climate. The UV intensity, salt air and seasonal ground movement here are particularly hard on cement-based finishes.
Look and feel
Both can look stunning. Modern fibreglass comes in deep blues, blacks, greys and even pebble-effect finishes. It is also non-porous, so it stays smooth and clean. Marbelite has a more classic, slightly textured feel that some homeowners prefer for its traditional aesthetic.
Water chemistry
Fibreglass is easier on chemicals. Because it is non-porous, algae has nowhere to take hold. You typically use 30 to 50 percent fewer chemicals to maintain a fibreglass pool. Marbelite is porous and can develop staining over time, especially in areas with hard borehole water.
Cost
Marbelite is cheaper upfront. Fibreglass costs roughly 20 to 30 percent more for an initial installation or reline. But when you factor in the longer lifespan and lower chemical costs, fibreglass typically works out cheaper over 15 years.
Repairability
Marbelite is easier to patch and touch up locally. Fibreglass repairs are possible but blending the gelcoat colour perfectly is harder. The good news is that fibreglass rarely needs spot repairs.
So which should you choose?
For most Cape Town homeowners building or renovating a residential pool, we recommend fibreglass, especially if you want a low-maintenance pool that performs well for 15+ years.
Marbelite still makes sense if you are on a tighter budget, want a more traditional look, or have a heritage property where the classic finish matters aesthetically.
The right finish depends on your pool, your property and your priorities. There is no universal answer, only the answer that fits your specific situation.
About relining
If your existing marbelite pool is past its prime, you do not have to replace the entire pool. We can apply fibreglass directly over a properly prepared marbelite surface, giving you a brand-new, low-maintenance finish at a fraction of the cost of building from scratch. The whole process takes 5 to 10 working days depending on pool size and condition.
