Thinking of building a pool? Quotes vary wildly in Cape Town, and most homeowners are shocked by how many costs only appear after construction starts. Here is what a new pool actually costs in the Western Cape in 2026, with no surprises.

The headline numbers

For a standard 8m x 4m residential pool in Cape Town in 2026, you should budget:

  • Entry-level concrete pool with marbelite: R180,000 to R260,000
  • Mid-range concrete pool with fibreglass finish: R250,000 to R380,000
  • Premium pool with quality finishes and features: R400,000 to R650,000+

These ranges assume an accessible site, standard ground conditions and a typical equipment package. If your site is tricky, the numbers can move significantly.

What is actually in your quote

A complete new pool build includes far more than just the pool shell. Watch out for quotes that only show some of these line items.

Site work and excavation (R20,000 to R60,000)

Includes excavation, spoil removal, rock breaking if needed, and site protection. Sloped sites or rocky ground (common in parts of the Cape Peninsula) add significantly to this cost.

Shell construction (R80,000 to R150,000)

Steel reinforcement, gunite or shotcrete shell, structural concrete. This is the structural heart of the pool and where you do not want to compromise.

Interior finish (R40,000 to R90,000)

Marbelite is the lower end. Fibreglass relining or premium pebble finishes are at the higher end. We recommend fibreglass for long-term value in the Western Cape climate.

Tiling and coping (R20,000 to R60,000)

Waterline tiles, coping stones around the edge, and any feature tiling. The choice of tile dramatically affects the final price.

Equipment (R25,000 to R70,000)

Pump, filter, chlorinator, plumbing, electrical connections. A variable-speed pump and salt chlorinator are higher upfront but save on running costs.

Decking and paving (R20,000 to R100,000+)

This is the line item most builders leave out. The pool itself is one cost. The deck, paving, beach area or any landscaping is separate, and can be substantial.

Cape Town-specific cost factors

  • Site access: If concrete trucks cannot reach your site, you may need a concrete pump (adds R5,000 to R20,000)
  • Rock excavation: Common in Hout Bay, Sea Point and parts of Constantia. Can add R15,000 to R50,000
  • Wind exposure: Pools in windier areas (Strand, Gordons Bay coast) benefit from better filtration and a cover, adding R10,000 to R25,000
  • Council approvals: Building plans, NHBRC, electrical compliance certificates, all required and budget around R8,000 to R15,000

What the cheap quotes leave out

If your quote is significantly below the ranges above, ask what is excluded. Common omissions in low quotes:

  • Backfill and ground reinstatement
  • Safety net or cover (often legally required for body corporates)
  • Lights and electrical work
  • Building plan submission
  • Final commissioning and chemical balance
  • Site cleanup and rubble removal
A quote that looks great usually has gaps. A quote that looks expensive usually includes everything. Compare like with like.

How to budget properly

Take the headline cost, add 15 to 20 percent contingency, and add a separate budget for landscaping and decking around the pool. That gets you to the real all-in number.

At Pools For Life, we give you a single detailed written quote that includes everything, with no hidden line items added later. We come to your property, assess the site in person, and tell you exactly what your pool will cost before any work begins.
