Fibreglass and marbelite are different interior finishes, and either can suit the right pool. The better choice depends on the existing shell, the look you want, surface preparation and the care you are prepared to give it. A finish should be selected after the pool’s condition has been assessed.

What is the difference?

Fibreglass relining bonds a reinforced resin system to a prepared surface and finishes it with a protective coating. Marbelite is a cement-based pool plaster applied to a suitable prepared shell. Neither description tells you whether the structure beneath it is sound.

Compare the finish and everyday care

Fibreglass typically provides a smooth finish. Marbelite has a plaster texture and can suit an owner who prefers that appearance. Both need brushing, balanced water and suitable cleaning products. Neither removes the need to look after circulation and filtration.

Compare preparation and repairs

Loose material, dampness, old coatings and shell defects affect the work required. A sound substrate matters for both finishes. Ask what will be stripped, which cracks will be repaired and how steps, corners and fittings will be treated. Local repairs may remain visible, particularly on an older surface.

What about lifespan and cost?

Avoid comparing guaranteed lifespans without the conditions behind them. Installation quality, water chemistry, ground movement and maintenance affect performance. Compare itemised quotes for the same pool, including preparation, repairs, mosaics, water handling and refilling. The cheapest finish on paper may leave substantial work outside the price.

Can fibreglass go over a marbelite pool?

Often, if the shell is suitable and correctly prepared. Structural movement or a leaking pipe needs its own solution. If the pool loses water, investigate the source before treating a new lining as the repair.

Questions to ask before deciding

Ask to see relevant completed projects. Confirm the proposed material system, finish options, estimated programme, curing requirements and written guarantee terms. Request care instructions and clarify which equipment or surrounds are included.
