Cape Town has four distinct pool seasons. Windy summers, wet winters, and two short shoulder seasons that catch most homeowners off guard. Here is exactly what to do, when, to keep your pool perfect all year.

Summer (December to February): Peak swimming season

Summer is when your pool gets the most use, which means the most demand on your filtration, chemistry and equipment. Hot Berg winds also dump huge amounts of dust and debris into uncovered pools.

  • Skim debris daily, especially after windy days
  • Test water chemistry twice a week
  • Backwash filter every 7 to 10 days
  • Run the pump 8 to 10 hours per day
  • Brush walls and steps weekly
  • Top up chemicals after pool parties or heavy rain

Autumn (March to May): The leaf problem starts

Cape Town autumns are mild but bring falling leaves and the first heavy rains. This is the season most pool owners get caught out.

  • Empty skimmer baskets every 2 to 3 days
  • Lower pump runtime to 6 to 8 hours
  • Add a phosphate remover to prevent algae blooms
  • Consider a leaf net or pool cover
  • Service equipment before winter

Winter (June to August): Do not abandon your pool

The biggest mistake Cape Town pool owners make is treating winter like off-season. Our wet winters bring algae blooms, chemical imbalances and equipment problems that are far more expensive to fix in spring than to prevent now.

  • Keep pump running 4 to 6 hours daily
  • Maintain chlorine and pH even in cold weather
  • Clear leaves and debris weekly
  • Cover the pool if possible
  • Check for cracks or leaks after major rainstorms
  • Service heaters before you need them

Spring (September to November): Get ready for summer

Spring is when you pay for any winter neglect. A properly maintained pool needs an hour or two of attention. A neglected pool can need a full week and several hundred rands of chemicals.

  • Full equipment service: pump, filter, heater
  • Shock treatment if water has algae or is cloudy
  • Adjust pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness
  • Stabiliser top-up (essential before summer UV)
  • Increase pump runtime back to 8+ hours
  • Replace or service the salt cell if relevant
A pool that is maintained consistently year-round costs less than a pool that gets fixed twice a year. The maths is simple.

The case for a regular service plan

Most Cape Town homeowners are not pool chemists, and they should not have to be. A weekly or fortnightly professional service costs less than most people think, and it eliminates the expensive surprises completely. You get consistent water quality, healthier equipment, and your weekends back. We offer flexible service plans across the Western Cape, with detailed written reports after every visit.
